since the initial launch of Shovel Knight Back in 2014, Yacht Club Games’ 2D adventure title has since grown into a de facto franchise thanks to the inclusion of spin-off titles. Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon And Shovel Knight Dig, The latter is the latest release from the franchise and is available now on the Switch eShop; Be sure to check out our full review for all of our thoughts on the Roguelite platformer.

Of course, in addition to the three downloadable story campaigns for Shovel Knight, the introduction of Shovel Knight digs means that the overall narrative and lore for the franchise has also expanded significantly. This begs the question: When is Shovel Knight Dig, and what is the full Shovel Knight timeline?

Well, we spoke to Celia Schilling, Marketing Manager for Yacht Club Game, to get some much-needed answers. We delve into the above Shovel Knight timeline, the Hexcavators and the Order of No Quarter, and the history of Mole Knight and Tinker Knight.

Nintendo Life: Given that Specter of Torment was also a prequel to Shovel of Hope, where does Shovel Knight Dig really fit in?

Celia Schilling, Marketing Manager, Yacht Club: Story-wise, Shovel Knight is the first game in the Dig Shovel Knight series. This makes it a prequel that also takes place before Specter of Torment! You may remember the intro line from the first Shovel Knight game – “Long ago, the land was untamed, and roamed by great adventurers.” Well, Digg takes you back to the good old days, when Shovel Knight and Shield Knight explored together, fighting baddies and looking for treasure! We hope fans will be interested in playing in the shows leading up to the original saga.

Beyond the obvious fact that they are new creations for the game, is there a canon reason why the new knights weren’t in Order of No Quarter?

First, the leader of the Hexcavators is Drill Knight – as a well-known criminal mastermind, he’ll likely see the Order job as an entry-level position. Also… once he teamed up for Digg, I’m pretty sure he learned that joining a bigger team meant a smaller split of money.

As far as Scrap Knight, Hive Knight and Spore Knight are concerned, they may have their own reasons not to be involved with the latter order – reasons you’ll discover by playing Digg! Regardless, I don’t think Enchantress will appreciate all the garbage, grub, and noise stints infecting Tower of Fate.

And conversely, is there a reason why the other members of the Order of No Quarter didn’t join the Hexcavators?

Hmm, a canon reason? They haven’t met yet! Spector Knight is still Donovan! So, he ends up stealing stuff in the land to live with Luann. Treasure Knight is busy becoming a pirate. King Knight is still eating pies at his mother’s house. Maybe you can learn more in Digg…

As for the devs, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove already featured the story of Plague Knight, Specter Knight, and King Knight. While making Shovel Knight Dig, we wanted to highlight some of the other members of the Order! From there the process of dismantling it was going on. The propeller knight flies around in the sky so it doesn’t make sense for him to be underground. Maybe the polar knight is a lot more down to earth tastier… and so on. We specifically picked Mole Knight because we thought it was really fun to change her outfit into a different element. His internal name was “Aqua Mole Knight” for the longest time. Maybe he has an electric or grass-themed suit in the next game! As far as Tinker Knight is concerned, the little techie sly fits right in. All the dacoits need the brain behind this brawl! We’re sure we’ll be featuring more of our colorful characters at some point in the future. What do you think will be fun to watch next?

How will this game dig into the history of both Mole Knight and Tinker Knight, since they are both hexcavators at the moment?

Shovel Knight Dig gave us a chance to find out who Tinker Knight and Mole Knight are as characters. Tinker Knight signed with Hexcavators as an engineer! The little planner found interest in his interesting problems to solve under the earth. Mole Knight, on the other hand, joins the team after becoming fascinated by Drill Knight’s tunneling skills! We don’t want to spoil too much, so you’ll have to play the game to learn more about Hexcavators’ deep interpersonal dynamics!

Many thanks to Celia Schilling for taking the time to chat with us. Shovel Night Dig is now on the Nintendo Switch eShop for a price of $24.99 / £22.49.
